Your First Barbershop Visit

If you have always gone to a hair salon or cut your own hair, walking into a barbershop for the first time can feel unfamiliar. What should you ask for? How long does it take? What is the difference between a barbershop and a salon?

This guide covers everything you need to know before your first visit to Tay's Barbershop.

Barbershop vs. Salon: What is the Difference?

A barbershop specializes in men's grooming. While salons offer a wide range of services for all genders, barbershops focus specifically on men's haircuts, fades, beard work, and shaves. The tools are different too -- barbers are trained with clippers, straight razors, and specialized techniques for men's hair.

The atmosphere is also different. Barbershops tend to be more relaxed and social. You will hear conversation, music, and a sense of community that is unique to the barbershop experience.

What Happens During a Visit

1. Check In

When you arrive, let the front know you are there. If you booked ahead on Booksy, your barber will be expecting you. Walk-ins are welcome too -- you may just have a short wait depending on how busy we are.

2. Consultation

Before any cutting starts, your barber will ask what you want. This is the time to describe your ideal style, show reference photos, or ask for recommendations. Be honest about how much maintenance you want to do at home.

3. The Cut

Your barber will get to work using clippers, scissors, and other tools depending on your style. A typical haircut takes 20 to 35 minutes. Fades and detailed work may take a bit longer.

4. Detail Work

After the main cut, your barber will clean up the edges, line up your hairline, and trim any stray hairs. If you want a beard trim or line-up, this is when that happens.

5. Finish

Your barber will show you the final result from all angles, apply any finishing products, and remove the cape. This is a good time to ask questions about how to style your hair at home.

How to Communicate with Your Barber

Good communication leads to a great haircut. Here are some tips:

  • Bring photos of styles you like
  • Be specific about length -- "short" means different things to different people
  • Mention problem areas like cowlicks or thinning spots
  • Ask questions if you do not understand something
  • Give feedback during the cut if something does not look right

How Often Should You Visit?

It depends on your style:

  • Fades and short styles: Every 2-3 weeks
  • Medium-length styles: Every 3-4 weeks
  • Longer styles: Every 4-6 weeks
  • Beard maintenance: Every 2-4 weeks

Regular visits keep your style looking fresh and are easier for your barber to maintain.

Tipping Etiquette

Tipping your barber is customary and appreciated. A standard tip is 15 to 20 percent of the service cost. If your barber went above and beyond, feel free to tip more.
